Paris: Russia plans to do its utmost to achieve success at the talks with the US on a new arms reduction treaty, President Dmitry Medvedev has said.
He stressed that Russia makes a considerable contribution to the nuclear disarmament process. The fulfilment of obligations on the nuclear non-proliferation treaty "is one of
our foreign policy priorities."
"This concerns a long-term comprehensive strategy of well-balanced and phased elimination of nuclear arsenals in the conditions of equal security for all," Medvedev said in his address to participants in the Global Zero Summit in the French capital, adding that Moscow chose the path of negotiations towards nuclear disarmament.
"Russia is actively cooperating with the United States in the preparation of a new and legally binding deal to replace the START treaty. We plan to do our utmost to ensure success of these talks and coordinate a comprehensive and viable document that will give a fresh impetus to the disarmament process," the president said.
Medvedev expressed confidence that "a productive dialogue and joint efforts of the world community will help to achieve the most important goal - a safe and sustainable future of our planet."
