Alamty: Sixteen prisoners have been
killed in the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan during an
extended shootout with security guards that ended with a
powerful explosion, officials said.
The prisoners died in the explosion, which occurred in
the southeastern town of Balkhash, the Kazakh justice
ministry's corrections system spokesman Sultan Kusetov said.
"We fulfilled our main objective. Those who tried to
flee (the jail) were unable to leave," he said.
