Nairobi (Kenya): The UN`s representative to Somalia is condemning the killing of a Somali member of Parliament.

A statement by Augustine Mahiga received Sunday said politician Mustafa Haji Maalim was killed by gunmen yesterday.

Mahiga called the shooting a cowardly attack.

Somali leaders seated a new parliament last month as part of a changeover in government. Those Parliamentarians voted in a new president this month.

It wasn`t immediately clear whether Maalim was killed by political rivals, criminals or insurgents. Government figures are frequently targeted for death.

African Union and Somali troops pushed al-Shabab militants out of Mogadishu in August 2011, but the militants continue to carry out bombing attacks and hit-and-run shootings.
