Sri Lanka keen to implement war commission report

Sri Lanka keen to implement war commission report Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has told parliament that it has no objection in implementing recommendations of a war commission appointed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The government stand has been to implement the recommendations of the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), Xinhua quoted Petroleum Minister Susil Premjayantha as saying Wednesday.

He, however, said there were doubts if the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) was really keen to see the report implemented or had other ideas.

The UNHRC adopted a resolution on Sri Lanka last month calling for full implementation of the LLRC recommendations.

Sri Lanka said it would not fully implement the recommendations as the commission had gone beyond its mandate in some areas.

The government felt the UNHRC was attempting to lay the groundwork to take action against Sri Lankan political leaders and military officials over allegations of war crimes during the final stages of the war against Tamil Tiger rebels, said Premjayantha.

Premjayantha told parliament that the government will not allow any foreign government or institution to conduct investigations in Sri Lanka.

Leave out the point that LLRC is our commission and it was manned by our own learned men and women, we must understand that only a few hundred people gave evidence to it and often with conflicting ones at that. As usual in such a situation the commission had accepted some views and ignored others. The question we have to ask ourselves is, was it on merits the commission made its decisions or to please the powers that hang over heads of Sri Lankan’s like the sword of Damocles. Some pundits like Dayan Jayathilaka type 13A backers think, every one of those LLRC findings have to be implemented is just as absurd as to say it should all be thrown away as thrash. When Dayan opined Sri Lanka has to change like Myanmar, I realised he is again promoting his own politicking than uphold country agenda. The President of Sri Lanka is not a military junta like the one in Myanmar. He was elected on a widely published manifesto with over 60% approval. For that reason, recommendations or findings by eight members of LLRC commission cannot push the President to go against his own manifesto though he himself has appointed them. LLRC members are neither more learned than many of us nor are they omnipotent and omniscient Gods. It should be the job of the elected members of the Parliament to choose what or what not to implement of 270 odd recommendations by LLRC. Leela

No matter what the West or its mouthpiece UNHCR wants done, Sri Lanka should and has to do what is right and required by majority of its population for democracy’s sake, taking note that Sri Lanka is a severing country and it is for all piece loving citizens and shall not be carved out as some faction of radical Tamils would want. After all, Tamils are just another minority currently making up for about 8% of the population. Majority have left due to oppression by LTTE Tamil rebels a.k.a. Tamil Tigers of their own kind and the rest mostly eliminated by its radical and cruel leader Prabhakaran leading up to the so called Elam 4 war where he and his entire family and inner circle of criminals were eliminated by Sri Lankan armed forces. For Tamils it is now like that fox following the ram to pick the balls that never falls off.
