"A great challenge: stop ruining the garden which God has entrusted to us so that all may enjoy it," Francis wrote on his Twitter account, which has over 18 million followers worldwide.

Francis`s first major teaching letter on climate change and its effects on the planet`s poor, "Be Praised - On the Care of Our Common Home" describes "an ecological crisis" that is being wrought on the planet.

The encyclical, issued on June 18, calls for rapid replacement of fossil fuels with renewables and aims to inspire Catholics and non-Catholics alike to protect the Earth, making changes to lifestyles and energy use.
