Kathmandu: Life was on Monday paralysed in
seven western Nepalese districts after a group called a
general strike demanding that the secular republic be declared
a Hindu nation again.
Cadres of pro-Hindu outfit Bhishma Ekta Parishad,
vandalised a passenger bus at Godawari of Kailali district in
western Nepal for defying their strike.
Their strike has affected normal life in Achham,
Baitadi, Bajura, Bajhang, Dadeldhura, Darchula and Doti
districts in western Nepal, police said.
Markets, educational institutions remained closed,
transportation was halted and trade and industrial activities
also paralysed due to the strike.
The group was demanding to make the country a Hindu
state, keep cow as the national animal, keep the national flag
intact and rolling back of the decision to switch the country
into federalism.
On May 28, 2008 the 601-member Constituent Assembly
declared Nepal a "secular, federal democratic republic,"
abolishing the 240-year-old monarchy.
