Strong 6.2 quake hits Papua New Guinea: USGS Port Moresby: A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea today but caused no tsunami or damage, seismologists said.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 8:28 am (0358 IST) today, 125 kilometres west of Arawa at a depth of 33 kilometres.

"There was moderate shaking, no damage and no tsunami," Lawrence Anton, a seismologist at the Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea, told AFP.

Papua New Guinea sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where continental plates meet. The region is frequently struck by earthquakes.

Geoscience Australia measured the tremor at 6.6 magnitude with a depth of only seven kilometres.
