Kabul: Taliban suicide bombers on Thursday targeted the Afghan Police near Kabul, killing at least 30 new recruits, media reports said.

This is one of the devastating attacks on Afghan security forces in recent months.

Reports claimed that the explosions struck two buses which were transporting police cadets near the Afghan capital.

Though the exact toll was not immediately known, some media reports estimated it to be from 30-40 deaths.

"We are still investigating the precise nature of the blast, whether it was a suicide attack, car bomb or whatever -- we do not know it at the moment," AFP quoted a senior official as saying.

Paghman District Governor Haji Mohammad Musa Khan told the BBC that many more had been injured.

The dead included Nepali security guards working for the Canadian embassy.
