Suicide bomber dies in Russia`s restive south

A suicide bomber blew himself up near a Special Forces police base in Russia`s restive North Caucasus.

Makhachkala: Police say a suicide
bomber blew himself up near a Special Forces police base in
Russia`s restive North Caucasus, but caused no other deaths or
injuries.

Police spokesman Vyacheslav Gasanov says the bomber
detonated an explosives belt about 150 meters (yards) from a
trailer housing OMON police late Saturday after failing to
penetrate the base in Kizlyar, a town in Dagestan.

The bomber also was carrying two grenades and a
Kalashnikov automatic rifle. The dead bomber was identified as
30-year-old Abdulkadyr Aliyev. Dagestan and other North
Caucasus republics have been destabilized by an Islamic
insurgency that has spread following two separatist wars in
nearby Chechnya.

Dagestan has emerged as the militants` main base, and
they regularly attack police and other authorities.
