Ankara: Suspecting an attack from Syria as Western allies consider a firm step against Syrian government, Turkey on Thursday puts its armed forces on alert.

Turkey, one of the critics of Assad regime against alleged chemical attacks, has directed the military to keep a vigilant eye on the close border areas.

"The Turkish armed forces have the mandate to take every measure against any security threat from Syria or elsewhere ... and retaliate within the rules of engagement,” said Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

The world has condemned the poison gas attack near Damascus in Syria.

Moreover, the US and its European allies have threatened Assad regime for a possible punitive action.
