Taipei: Taiwan`s parliamentary speaker says he will consider opening the legislative floor to Chinese tourists to educate them on democracy.

Wang Jin-pyng said late Friday he will study a lawmaker`s proposal to help spread the island`s democracy to authoritarian China.

Ties between Taiwan and China have improved substantially under Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou`s three-year efforts to engage China economically. The two sides split amid civil war in 1949.
More than 600,000 Chinese tourists visited Taiwan last year. Tour operators say many have stayed in their hotels to watch prime time TV political talk shows.
