Tehran warns opposition leaders will stand trial

Tehran`s chief prosecutor has described opposition leaders as criminals.

Tehran: Tehran`s chief prosecutor is warning opposition leaders they will stand trial for the unrest following June 2009 Presidential Elections and says the proceedings are only a matter of time.

Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi told worshippers at Tehran University on Friday that the opposition leaders are criminals who sought to topple the government through street protests.

He was referring to Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi — who both ran in the disputed elections — as well as former reformist president Mohammad Khatami.

The remarks appear to ratchet up pressure ahead of possible charges against top opposition figures, who are already barred from leaving the country.

Dowlatabadi says the opposition is tied to Iran`s enemies and the case needs to be handled carefully.
