Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian authorities on Thursday said that an Iranian national, allegedly involved in a botched bomb plot in Thailand, was trying to fly to Iran when he was held in the capital Kuala Lumpur.
Masoud Sedaghatzadeh was arrested on Wednesday at Kuala Lumpur`s international airport.
The 31-year-old Sedaghatzadeh’s arrest showed Malaysia was "very serious and committed`` in addressing the threat of terrorism, said Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.
"The authorities of this country will never allow Malaysia to become a location, base, or transit point for terrorists or individuals who are wanted by any other country,`` he said in a statement.
Hussein refrained from giving further details.
A statement released by Malaysian police chief Ismail Omar late Wednesday said, “The Iranian was arrested under the Immigration Act of Malaysia out of intelligence provided by Thai counterparts.”
“He is being investigated for terrorism activities in relation to bombings in Thailand.”
Meanwhile, a top Thai policeman said on Thursday that the three Iranians detained after accidentally setting off explosives in Bangkok were planning to attack Israeli diplomats.
