Three survive death as boat hits ship in Stockholm

Three sailors escaped death when their small boat collided and sank after ramming into a cruise ship whilst sailing in the Stockholm archipelago Saturday, a media report said.

Stockholm (Sweden): Three sailors escaped death when their small boat collided and sank after ramming into a cruise ship whilst sailing in the Stockholm archipelago Saturday, a media report said.

According to the Swedish online daily Local, this morning, the small boat collided into a Viking Line cruiser, carrying 1,827 passengers onboard, while heading towards Finland. 

"Foggy conditions" was the likely cause of the accident and described the trio`s survival as "miraculous", Xinhua quoted witnesses as saying. 

According to reports, the rescue of the three was helped by locals from the island of Maro, who rushed to the scene with their own boats and assisted the emergency services to retrieve the three from the water.

Rickard Rundgren Bjork, a member of the coastguard services paid tribute to the quick-thinking locals, describing them as "heroes".

The rescued three were treated for shock afterwards, and the Viking cruise resumed its course shortly after the accident.
