Tibet group says Nepal sent refugee back to China

Kathmandu: Nepal forcibly repatriated a Tibetan refugee after he escaped from China, a Tibetan exile group said on Thursday, more than one year after a similar claim sparked international condemnation.

The refugee, a 20-year-old known as Tashi, crossed into western Nepal with five other Tibetans in September but was separated from them en route to Kathmandu, according to the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT).

"Tashi had been detained by Nepalese police after crossing the border and handed over to their Chinese counterparts on the Tibet side," the group, citing unnamed sources, said.

It added that it believed he was now being held in the Tibetan capital Lhasa.

When the last deportation was reported in June 2010, the United Nations refugee agency in Kathmandu had said it was "extremely concerned" by the move.

Hundreds of Tibetans make the difficult and dangerous journey to Nepal every year, fleeing political and religious repression in China, though their numbers have fallen sharply in the past few years.

Under an informal agreement between Nepal and the UN they have previously been given safe passage to India where the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama lives in exile.

But US embassy cables released by whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks last year suggested that China paid Nepalese police to detain Tibetans as they crossed the border.

Nepal, home to 20,000 Tibetan exiles, is under pressure from Beijing to stem the flow of Tibetans fleeing their homeland.

@ Dirgha prasai: I can understand the situation of Nepal being under constant economic vulnerability and unpredictable political situation inside and constant threat from the next global power china that force them to comply more with china than India, but deportation of Tibetan refugee and kicking and beating of peaceful demonstrator is something close to doggy features to its master as mentioned by tsering dhondup, shame of being Nepali

We Nepalese people have been offended by knowing the conspiracies policy of America. Nepal is landlocked country between two big neighbors- India and China. But Nepal had been influenced by Chinese good conduct- while that of Britain was the Rule of Might. Such behavior has reflected in reality of Nepal, India and China. Hence, Nepal is politically neutral. America and UN should understand the compulsion of Nepal. But the intention of Americans is to break China in the name of Human rights-Free-Tibet. The UN is also the ally of America because of present Secretary General Ban Ki Moon who is South Korean national. Thank you.

Hello Dirgha Raj Prasai, Do you really think that Tibet is a part of China. Do you really think that way? What historical evidence you have on your claim? By the way, Nepal got induction in UNO by getting support from some neighbouring countries that Nepal is a sovereign nation. Tibet was one such nation which supported Nepal. Now you people saying, Tibet a part of China? And yes, Why do Nepali police severely beats Tibetan peacful demonstrators? Does Nepal really has democracy? Police can stop Tibetans from holding a demonstration but why do they have to misbehave with them? Look at India. We also protest here and sometimes police stops us but they dont act like Nepali Chinese sponsored police. Nepal is like a dog licking Chinese born. Keep licking!

Dirgha, Looks like you should start learning Mandarin because you are being bought by the Chinese Government. Maybe this is good for you in the short-run but your children will suffer the consequences of such compromises. Just wait until this totalitarian regime (CCP) gets control of your water, your telephone system, and your borders.
