Tokyo: The height of Tokyo Sky
Tree, now under construction in Tokyo`s Sumida Ward, topped
600 meters, making it the world`s tallest self-standing tower.
Until yesterday, the Canton Tower in China`s Guangdong
Province held the record.
Tokyo Sky Tree will reach its target height of 634
meters by the end of March. The project, which began in July
2008, will be completed in December.
It became the tallest tower in Japan in March last
year after topping the 333-meter-high Tokyo Tower.
A digital terrestrial television broadcast antenna is
currently being installed on the tower, which will eventually
have two viewing platforms, at 350- and 450-meter points.
Tokyo Sky Tree is set to begin operations in the
spring of 2012. Commercial facilities, office buildings and an
aquarium are slated to be built nearby.
The tower is already attracting many visitors, who
want to see it before completion, making it a new Tokyo
tourist attraction.
