Turkey traces pilots` bodies missing after Syrian jet downing
Ankara: The bodies of two missing pilots of Turkish Fighter Jet Phantom-4, that was shot down by Syria last month, were found on Wednesday, Turkish military said.
The bodies of Captain Gokhan Ertan and Lieutenant Hasan Hüseyin Aksoy were finally traced. Though the exact location where they were found, has not been mentioned, the military General Staff said that they were working to remove the bodies from the Mediterranean.
Further details about the bodies were not given.
The jet downing incident on June 22 worsened the relation between Syria and Turkey toa considerable extent, with Turkey scrambling jets along its border with Syria, in response to Syrian aircrafts hovering near the border.
Turkey reacted bitterly, with PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan warning Syria in rudest terms. Turkey also called a NATO meet over the same that saw the NATO allies condemning Syria’s action as unacceptable.
Syria has, on the other hand, regretted the jet downing episode, with President Assad calling it an isolated case. Assad further said that the jet was attacked after they mistook it as an Israeli jet.
Assad showed “100%” regret over the incident in an interview saying “"I wish it hadn`t happened".
While Turkey claims that the jet was shot down by Syria in international space, Syria maintains that the jet was shot when in its territory.
The position of pilots bodies’ may give more information about the location where the jet was shot but so far Turkish military has not informed much.
