Istanbul: Police in Turkey have arrested
12 people suspected of links to al Qaeda and seized weapons
and explosives in a series of raids, a news agency
reported.

The suspects were allegedly preparing attacks when
they were arrested in simultaneous swoops in Istanbul and the
eastern city of Van, the agency reported late yesterday
without citing sources.

Turkish police regularly target suspected al Qaeda
supporters since two sets of twin suicide bombings hit the
country`s biggest city Istanbul, five days apart in November
2003.

A Turkish cell of al Qaeda was held responsible for
the attacks, which killed 63 people, including the British
consul.

Seven men were jailed for life in 2007 for the
bombings.
