Manama: Two men, including an Indian, have been sentenced to 15-years in jail in Bahrain for kidnapping and robbing an Indian worker while posing as police officers, a media report said today.

The Indian and the Bahraini national abducted the 35-year-old Indian and forced him to get into their car in Sanad.

They took him to the desert, tied him up with a piece of cloth and covered his face, before stealing two mobile phones and money last September, Gulf Daily News reported.

They were convicted of theft, assault, kidnap and impersonating by the High Criminal Court, which yesterday jailed them for 15 years each.

The two men were also involved in another case of theft and kidnap.

"According to confessions of the defendants to prosecutors and prosecution evidence we find the defendants guilty of theft, assault, kidnap and posing as policemen," the court verdict said.

The 31-year-old Indian suspect, who was not identified, told prosecutors during questioning that he carried out the crimes because he needed money.

He also said he worked for the Interior Ministry for nine years but when he quit he decided to draw up a plan with his friend to kidnap and rob people in Salmabad, Sanad and Manama.

Judges also ordered the deportation of the Indian defendant after completing his sentence.
