UAE interrogates women linked to Brotherhood group
Dubai: UAE authorities Wednesday said they are questioning women activists from a group linked to Egypt`s Muslim Brotherhood, whose core leadership was arrested recently for allegedly plotting to overthrow the regime and seize power.
Attorney General of the state, Salem Saeed Kubaish, said that women were being interrogated in connection with the unearthing of the secret organisation that aimed "to seize power in the state".
It was reported on Jan 1 that more than 10 people had been arrested for being part of the "secret" group linked to Egypt`s Muslim Brotherhood, which authorities said were discussing ways to "overthrow regimes in the Arab states".
The Attorney General said today that the `women`s organisation` was a fundamental part of the overall organisational structure of the group.
"The women under suspicion have been summoned and are being questioned with full respect for the right to privacy, the norms and the traditions of UAE society, in line with the rules and principles of Sharia, in the proceedings of the investigation," the official WAM news agency quoted Kubaish as saying.
The number of women being interrogated was not specified.
He stressed that "all rights of the above-mentioned women are guaranteed during the investigation stage, without prejudice to justice and equality of all before the law. The law does not differentiate between people on the basis of gender".
Three Egyptian doctors were among the men who were arrested for being a part of the secret organisation.
Investigators said earlier they were expecting the probe to reveal "serious information on conspiracies that were hatched against UAE state security" as well as the names of hundreds of people associated with the Brotherhood network.
