United Nations: In the wake of clashes
between Thailand and Cambodia on their shared border, UN
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for restraint on
part of both countries.
The clashes took place between 4 and 6 February
2011 and have reportedly claimed a number of lives and led to
the displacement of civilians and destruction of property,
according to the UN.
"The Secretary-General appeals to both sides to put
in place an effective arrangement for cessation of hostilities
and to exercise maximum restraint," said a statement issued by
Ban`s spokesperson.
"He also calls on them to continue their efforts to
finding a lasting solution to their dispute through
established mechanisms and arrangements and a spirit of
dialogue and good neighbourly relations," it added.
The dispute involves an 11th century Hindu temple in
Cambodia, Preah Vihear Temple, which both sides claim.
The New York Times reported that Prime Minister Hun
Sen of Cambodia asked the United Nations Security Council to
convene an urgent meeting to stop what he called Thai
aggression around the temple.
In the statement, the UN said it was ready to assist
in peaceful efforts to resolve the dispute.
