Geneva: A UN special investigator says he
has opened a probe into allegations of torture used by Libyan
ruler Moammar Gaddafi`s forces.
The UN`s special rapporteur for torture, Juan Mendez,
confirmed today that he is looking into "allegations under the
Gaddafi regime" since his forces began their brutal
suppression of protests and crackdown on opponents last month.
Mendez told reporters at the UN`s European
headquarters in Geneva that Gaddafi`s use of torture and
illegal detention in the past is "very well-documented."
He would not specify what he was looking into when
asked if he would probe media reports that Gaddafi`s soldiers
using ambulances to remove patients from hospitals and execute
