Sana`a: The anger over the anti-Islam US film seems to be intensifying and spreading like wildfire as protesters on Thursday stormed the US Embassy compound in Yemen`s capital, Sanaa, reports said.

The storming of US Embassy in Yemen comes a day after the protesters in Egypt and Libya raided the US missions in Cairo and Benghazi, with the later one culminating in the killing of US envoy Christ Stevens and his three American colleagues.

Before storming the embassy compound on Thursday, the demonstrators chanting "death to America", removed the embassy`s sign on the outer wall and set tires ablaze. Once inside the compound, they brought down the US flag and burned it.

Yemeni security forces used tear gas, water canons and warning gunshots to prevent the protestors` crowd from reaching embassy but the angry mob managed to torch many vehicles of the diplomats.

The Yemeni Embassy in Washington condemned the attack and vowed to ensure the safety of foreign diplomats and to step up security measures around their missions in the country.

Meanwhile in Egypt, protesters continued clashing with police near the US Embassy in the capital Cairo for the third day in a row.

The violence has raised worries that further protests could break out around the Muslim world as anger spreads over the movie.
Yemen is home to al Qaeda`s most active branch and the United States is the main foreign supporter of the Yemeni government`s counterterrorism campaign. The government on Tuesday announced that al Qaeda`s No 2 leader in Yemen was killed in an apparent US airstrike, a major blow to the terror network.
