Washington: Japan and the United States have started two-day working level talks in Washington to discuss the relocation of a key US base in Okinawa, sources said.

The two countries agreed in late May that a fresh study by experts on the location, configuration and construction method of the replacement facility for the US Marine Corps` Futemma Air Station would be completed by the end of August.

During the director-level meeting held at the State Department yesterday, the Japanese side is believed to have conveyed a plan of building a single runway as a main scenario, instead of the current two-runway scheme.
