Washington: House Democrats and Republicans are pressing US President Barack Obama to withdraw his nominee for US ambassador to Norway.

In a letter last week and a statement today, lawmakers called George Tsunis unqualified for the post. They cited his ill-informed comments at his Senate confirmation hearing in January and his lack of understanding about Norway.

The lawmakers, led by Republican Tom Marino, said that in light of Russia`s aggression, it was critical for the United States to have a knowledgeable and respected ambassador in Norway.

Tsunis, who is from New York, is the chairman of Chartwell Hotels and a Democratic fundraiser. Minnesota`s two Democratic senators, Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar have said they oppose the nominee.
