London: The US military plans to launch a Star Trek-style mission to "colonise alien worlds", a media report said Monday.
But the top brass believe they would need at least a century to complete the blueprints of the mission before the blast-off could take place, The Sun reported.
They are banking on breakthroughs in propulsion cutting the journey time to 100 years by then.
It would currently take the fastest object mankind has sent into space - the 38,000 mph Voyager probe - 70,000 years to reach, the newspaper said.
In the next 12 weeks, the project, called the 100-Year Starship study, will take key decisions such as where to head for.
The US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is offering a 300,000-pound prize to scientists who can begin overcoming hurdles for the mission, the newspaper added.
