Kabul: The United States and the top UN
envoy for Afghanistan Wednesday welcomed the results of the
troubled nation`s September parliamentary elections.
The US embassy said in a statement it welcomed the
outcome despite "irregularities and fraud in this election".
"The Independent Election Commission and the Electoral
Complaints Commission have worked well to advance a credible
process," the statement said.
Staffan de Mistura, Special Representative of the UN
Secretary-General for Afghanistan, said in a statement "the
United Nations strongly welcomes today`s certification of the
final results."
Afghan election authorities released the results for
voting in 34 out of the 35 constituencies that contested the
September 18 elections for the Wolesi Jirga, or lower house.
The results for a southern province where Pashtuns,
Afghanistan`s biggest ethnic group, suffered a full-scale
defeat has been withheld due to "technical problems."
