Washington: Praising the new Burmese government for its efforts to engage civil society, the US on Friday said that it wants the reform process in Burma to continue.
"We want to see her (Aung San Suu Kyi) be able to make her views known, to travel throughout Burma, to have free speech, free movement, security," the State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters at her daily news briefing.
"We have been encouraged in recent weeks and months that she is now more able to speak, that the government does seem to be meeting with her. But we want to see that process continue and deepen," Nuland said in response to a question.
A day earlier the State Department had showered praise on the new Burmese Government.
"The number-one thing that has changed in Burma is we have a new set of leaders who are more willing to work cooperatively with the opposition," she said in response to a question.
However, she said, a great amount of work needs to be done in Burma.
