US working with Pak on counter-terrorism issues

US cooperation is helping in yielding results that will bring greater stability in Pakistan, a senior US official has said.

Washington: The US is working closely with
Pakistan on counter-terrorism issues and its cooperation is
helping in yielding results that will bring greater stability
to the region, a senior US official has said.

"We work closely with Pakistan on counter-terrorism
issues. In fact, our cooperation with Pakistan helps bringing
in greater stability to the region," Mark Toner, the State
Department spokesman, told reporters.

Responding to a question on Pakistan`s action against
those involved in Mumbai terror attack, the Spokesman said the
investigation was ongoing, and the US would continue to work
with both governments.

"It`s not a zero-sum game... We have close cooperation
with Pakistan. It`s broad-reaching, but certainly in the field
of counter-terrorism, this is in both the countries` national
security interests and long-term interests to pursue this kind
of cooperation.

"We consult with them (Pakistan) frequently on these
kinds of issues. We are going to continue to cooperate with
them to deny any terrorist group safe haven," Toner said.

He acknowledged that it was not always an easy
relationship.

"But it`s in the interest of both the US and Pakistan. So
we pursue it and we seek to overcome the challenges, because
at the end of the day cooperation between US and Pakistan has
resulted in the deaths of many terrorists, and we view that as
very positive thing," he said.
