Vatican City: The Vatican on Wednesday distanced
itself from remarks by a top prelate linking paedophilia to
homosexuality, saying "psychological or medical" assertions
are not in the remit of Church officials.
"Church authorities do not deem it part of their
responsibility to make general assertions of a specifically
psychological or medical nature," the Vatican said in a
Vatican number two Tarcisio Bertone said Monday: "Many
psychologists, many psychiatrists have demonstrated there
exists no relationship between celibacy and paedophilia, but
many others have demonstrated... that there is a link
between homosexuality and paedophilia."
The statement went on to note that the Roman Catholic
Church has "statistical data" on the abuse of minors by
priests on the basis of cases referred to Vatican authorities.
Ten percent of the cases concerned paedophilia in the
"strict sense" and the other 90 percent concerned sex between
priests and adolescents, the statement said.
Of those, 60 percent had to do with homosexual acts and
30 percent with heterosexual acts, it said.
