Caracas: Days after Venezuela expelled three US diplomats, President Nicolas Maduro has reportedly called for a high-level meeting with the United States over the crisis.

Maduro made the request on the state television and asked US President Barack Obama to send an official for a high-level meeting with the Venezuelan officials, as per a CNN report.
Maduro further accused the US government of interfering with the internal affairs of the country and stoking anti-government protests, as per the news report.

The officials were expelled after they infiltrated universities under the pretext of doing official work.
The development came amidst increasing tensions over anti-government protests that has claimed eight lives and injured several others.

Opposition leader Leopold Lopez had surrendered himself to the authorities after he was accused of inciting violence during protests earlier this month.
