WW soldier`s memorial name spelling corrected after a century

London: Just imagine a century to correct a small spelling error. It took British authorities 97 years to correct First World War soldier`s memorial name spelling error.

Parish councillors in Shepreth, Cambridgeshire, agreed to have the spelling of Private George Samuel`s name changed from `Samuels` to `Samuel` on a village memorial earlier this year. Alison Corfield said the mis-spelling of her great uncle`s name - who passed away in 1916 at the age of 20 - had caused "great distress" to his parents after the 1914-18 conflict ended. Corfield, according the British newspaper Daily Mirror, claimed that authorities had refused to correct the mistake after the memorial was erected and the soldier`s parents had tried to hide the extra letter by covering it with mud. Corfield added that Private Samuel was a member of the London Regiment and died in France on September 30, 1916. Shepreth Parish Council has said it will pay for the work carried out on the memorial by a stonemason. PTI
