Shinde announces measures to make Delhi safer

New Delhi: Amid massive outrage over the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old girl in a moving bus in Delhi, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Wednesday announced a series of steps to prevent the recurrence of such crimes. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, the Home Minister said all buses and auto-rickshaws driven by unverified drivers shall be impounded by police. Further, drivers’ photographs and other details will be displayed in all public transport vehicles along with helpline numbers, Shinde said. Also, all buses will have to ensure there is enough light inside and all commercial vehicles will have to keep light on during the night. The minister further announced that all PCR vans will be equipped with GPS. As regards punishment, Shinde said a maximum of life imprisonment can be given in such cases.
