Hyderabad: After days without power, the situation improved marginally as electricity supply was restored in some parts of Seemandhra on Tuesday.
As per latest reports, the situation is back to near normal in Vishakhapatnam and Vizinagram after they faced total blackout since Sunday evening.
With incubators running on batteries in hospitals and no power to even run trains, the situation in Seemandhra had fast deteriorated to one of utter chaos.
Even state capital Hyderabad, which falls in Telangana, could not escape the misery for the last two days before the situation improved today.
The power crisis had hit all the 13 districts with even the airports in Vishakhapatnam and Vijayawada having had to run on backup power. The King George Hospital in Vizag – the biggest in the region – also struggled to keep essential medical equipment running.
The Indian Railways was also forced to curtail its operations with over 20 trains being cancelled due to lack of sufficient electricity to power the locomotives. “Most of Andhra Electricity Board employees are on strike, unable to run trains on time,” said Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge.
With Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy – himself a strong votary of united Andhra – meeting striking power sector employees, the chances of the power supply being restored to normal has brightened.
The blackout in Andhra Pradesh has also got chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala worried. They have written to the central electricity authority warning of possible tripping in their states due to feared collapse of the southern grid.
However, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today said that there is no imminent danger of a southern grid collapse.
