Islamabad: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which will form the federal government very soon, will face the biggest challenge in deciding the fate of former president and army chief Pervez Musharraf.
According to legal experts, there are chances that some international powers may influence the upcoming newly elected government to acquit Musharraf in the treason case, but the Pakistani media and opposition parties will oppose any favours to Musharraf, reports the Daily Times.
Lahore High Court Bar Association Rawalpindi President Taufiq Asif said that if the court directs the newly elected federal government to initiate proceedings against Musharraf then it would be bound to implement its order.
Pakistan Bar Council Vice Chairman Qulbi Hassan believes that it is the biggest challenge for the newly elected government to initiate proceedings against Musharraf under Article 6 of the constitution, but added that the former president should be given a fair trail.
Earlier on May 9, Attorney General of Pakistan Irfan Qadir had expressed apprehension before the Supreme Court that there would be serious political repercussions and ramifications if legal proceeding against Musharraf were initiated.
On the other hand, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has already said that the plight of the former army chief should serve as an example to other top brass who may be planning a takeover.
Nawaz had recalled how the former army chief toppled his government in a bloodless coup in 1999.
