I was never born. Never went to a school. Never studied at a college. Never got a job. And what’s more, never wrote this article….
Amazed? Well so were my friends when they got to know about my birthday, April 1. Call it a curse or a mysterious stroke of the stork’s wings, I happen to be born on a day on which the world celebrates …well, fools.
Being the optimist that I am, I started looking at the positive side of the bizarre date of my birth. For one- I never bother to throw a party on my birthday as my friends don’t believe me. In case anyone did, I could easily turn them away saying April Fools!
Of course, it also means no gifts. Ever.
It is not that I have never celebrated my birthday. I have found people with birthdays as peculiar as my own….February 29!
But even after all these “consolations” I decided to dig into the history and origin of this day. So here goes…
In 1582 when the reformed Gregorian calendar was introduced in France, it called for New Year`s Day to be celebrated on January 1, to match the Roman calendar. But people in rural areas of France continued to celebrate New Year in the spring and they were called the “April Fools”. The day became popular in France and it was called “Poisson d’Avril” or “April Fish”.
Playing pranks and getting people to do some really ridiculous things has become a regular practice of this ‘festival’. People might get irritated or even angry, but that’s where the fun lies.
Laughing at others is human nature. The recipe of having a great time and fun moments on this day is simple- choose a person, make him the butt of your jokes and just say with a grin, ‘April Fool’!
Love it or hate it, there’s no ignoring it. Fools’ Day has its own do’s and don’ts. Do -make fools of those who bully you throughout the year, it is a golden opportunity to take revenge for being on the receiving end for the rest of the year. Don’ts- well, don’t go overboard and play pranks on someone who will make you regret it all year around like...your boss.
So, it’s a fool’s day in a fool’s world. And oh you could wish me a Happy Birthday; if you believe me, that is.
