Terrorists to get death or life imprisonment in K’taka

Bangalore: Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed an amendment bill to include act of terrorism under the purview of organised crimes and to provide for deterrent punishment of death or imprisonment for life.

The Karnataka Control of Organised Crimes (Amendment) bill, 2009, also provides for a fine of Rs five lakh for committing an offence of act of terrorism and attachment of the property of the accused pending investigation.

The bill, introduced by Minister for Home V S Acharya, facilitates increasing the period of filing the charge-sheet from six months to one year.

The House also passed the Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum-Grabbers (Amendment) Bill, 2009, which brings into its ambit video and audio pirates.

Video or audio pirate was defined in the bill as a person who commits or attempts to commit or abets the commission of offences of infringement of copyright habitually for commercial gain, in relation to cinematograph film or a record embodying any part of the sound track associated with the film, punishable under the Copy Right Act, 1957.
