Guj Cong asks elected members to take 20% pay cut for a year

Ahmedabad: The Union Government's austerity drive has trickled down to the state level as Gujarat Congress on Wednesday asked all its elected party members, including MPs, MLAs and municipal councillors, to take a 20 per cent pay cut for one year.

"In view of drought in several parts of the country we have asked all our MPs, MLAs, district panchayat presidents, mayors, municipal councillors and those occupying positions on the boards or corporations to take a 20 per cent cut in their salaries," state Congress president Siddharth Patel said.

"We have asked the party members to direct their respective offices to deduct 20 per cent of their salary and pay it for state government's disaster relief fund," he said, adding that they have also been asked to send copy of their letter of approval to the Congress party office.

The pay cut would be for the duration of one year from September 1, 2009 to August 31, 2010.

Patel said that this decision was taken during the Congress Working Committee meeting by party President Sonia Gandhi.
