Gangotri shrine closed for winter

Dehra Dun: The portals of Gangotri shrine, one of the Chardhams at Garhwal Himalayas, were closed on Sunday for pilgrims in view of the onset of winter.

Amid chanting of Vedic hymns, the priests locked the doors of the shrine in the presence of senior administrative and police officials and devotees, official sources said.

After the closure, the idol of Goddess Ganga was carried in a palanquin to nearby Mukhba village, denoting the wintry sojourn of the Goddess, for worship during the winter.

The shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri -- commonly known as Chardham -- are closed in October-November every year as they remain snow-bound during the winter. They will be reopened in April-May for pilgrims.

The portals of Kedarnath and Yamunotri would be closed on the auspicious 'Bhaiyya Duj' tomorrow, to be followed by Badrinath shrine on November 17.
