Houston University mulls setting up campus in India



Farukkhabad (UP): Houston University, a leading educational institution in the United States, is planning to set up a campus in India, its Chancellor Renu Khator said here on Wednesday.

"I met Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal in New Delhi recently and discussed the possibility of setting up Houston University's campus in India," Khator, who was here to meet her relatives, told agency.

"The proposed project may include awarding of joint degrees by the two countries," she said.

Khator, who hails from Farukkhabad district, had come to India to attend a meeting of the Global Advisory Council, headed by the Prime Minister.

The Houston University's Chancellor said at present 61,000 students were pursuing various courses in the varsity, of which 1000 were Indians.

She favoured participation of the industrial sector and private organisations in higher education in India like in the US.

Khator said a third of Houston varsity's financial burden was borne by the government and two-thirds by the private sector.
