Displaced Reangs will be taken back by Mizoram soon: Sarkar

Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Wednesday said he has got an assurance from his Mizoram counterpart that the 35,000 displaced Reang tribals, being sheltered in six refugee camps in North Tripura district for the past 13 years, would be taken back soon.

"I had discussed the issue of repatriation of the Reangs sheltered in North Tripura during my recent visit to Delhi with Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla who said they would be taken back soon", Sarkar told reporters here.

He said Thanhawla during his recent visit to Tripura had held a meeting with the refugee leaders on January 8 and asked them to find out areas where the Reangs could be accomodated in Mizoram.

The Reangs had fled their ancestral homes in Mizoram following clashes with the Mizos and took shelter in Tripura in 1997.
