Gang involved in ivory trade unearthed in Mettur
Salem (Tamil Nadu): Forest officials
have unearthed another gang involved in ivory trade and seized
six tusks, making it the third ivory seizure in the state in
less than a month.
One person was arrested in the district in this
connection on March 13 by a special team of Forest Department
officials led by Deputy Conservator of Forests Kandasami.
Following a tip-off, the team intercepted the suspects
near Mettur, Salem. While three of them escaped, one was
nabbed and six elephant tusks were seized from his possession,
according to a statement from Wildlife Trust of India (WTI)
which assisted the officials in the case.
Tamil Nadu Forest Department authorities along with
the WTI had earlier this month seized a pair of tusks in
Hosur. Prior to this, another pair of 5.5 feet long tusks were
seized in Dharmapuri, on February 20.
