MIC expresses concern over rising number of divorces
Kuala Lumpur: Expressing concern over the rising number of divorces among the ethnic Indian community here, the Malaysian Indian Congress has sought the help of religious and social organisation to help arrest the trend.
MIC Vice President G Palanivel said Indian couples were applying for divorce within a year of their marriage, majority of them over trivial issues.
Palanivel was quoted as saying by Tamil Nesan, a Tamil daily, that divorces had led to many social problems in the country and the next generation had to bear the consequences.
Married couples must realise that the key to sustaining a long and happy marriage are mutual understanding, cooperation and adjustment.
"For a marriage to succeed, both husband and wife must be committed to its success. It will not develop on its own accord," he told the daily.
He sought the help of Indian religious and social organisations in finding a way to reduce the number of divorces among the community, he said.
