Sikkim Assembly passes resolution on Gorkhaland
Gangtok: The Sikkim Assembly on Tuesday passed a
resolution which stated that the formation of Gorkhaland is
the only solution to ensure free movement of traffic on NH
31A - the life line of the land-locked state and vital for
peace, security and development of Sikkim.
Speaking on the resolution, Chief Minister Pawan Kumar
Chamling said that disturbances in Darjeeling, neighbouring
Sikkim, had shown no signs of let-up over the years which
resulted in the disruption of free movement of traffic along
the NH-31A and that the remedy lay only in a permanent
Recalling that the problem in Sikkim started as early
as 1985, the chief minister said that on account of the
frequent shut-downs of the national highway, the state's
estimated economic loss per day stood at Rs 50 crore.
The resolution stated, ''The hopes and aspirations
deeply embedded in the hearts and minds of the people of
Darjeeling for the state of Gorkhaland have been pending for a
very long time which are genuine, legitimate, justified and
within the framework of the Constitution.''
