Taiwanese President to try for second term
Taipei: Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou will bid for a second term in next year's election, riding on a strong economic recovery and markedly improved ties with rival China.
Ma registered with his Nationalist Party on Saturday as its presidential candidate in polls set for next January. He has no challengers from his own party.
The main opposition Democratic Progressive Party will name its candidate next month.
The race is expected to be tight. Ma's popular support has hovered slightly above 30 percent over the past two years, with public displeasure mounting over government inefficiency and a widening gap between rich and poor.
