‘Probe into police-judicial magistrate brawl on’

Cuttack: Orissa Government informed the High Court on Thursday that the Justice A S Naidu Commission probing the alleged police-judicial magistrate brawl at Rourkela had already started functioning.

The government has provided all necessary infrastructure facilities to the Commission, it said in its affidavit at the court of Chief Justice V Gopala Gowda and Justice B N Mohapatra.

The High Court had earlier expressed displeasure at the state's 'lack of sincerity' on the issue.

The government, which had on April 16 asked the Commission to submit its report on the incident within three months, took more than one month to provide the necessary facilities to the Commission.

Meanwhile, the HC has adjourned the hearing of the PIL filed by advocate Dayanidhi Lenka to next week when it would decide over the prayer of Rourkela Bar Association to expand the scope of the Commission to also probe the alleged highhandedness of Rourkela police.

Rourkela-based Panposh judicial magistrate Arun Kumar Patnaik was allegedly assaulted by local police inspector Sadananda Pujari on the night of April 2. This evoked a state-wide protest by the lawyers, including at the High Court and paralysed judicial activities in the state for over a week.
