Omar seeks help from panchayats in governance

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Monday sought cooperation from the newly elected panchayat members to ensure good governance in the state.

"The establishment of this system is answer to so many questions relating to the development and social fronts," the chief minister said.

Speaking to sarpanches and panches of Uri and Rafiabad Assembly constituencies at two functions, Omar said they should be prepared to shoulder the responsibility of serving on various fronts.

"In addition of your involvement in various activities related to rural development sector, your role in the launch and monitoring of schemes in other public service sectors will also be sought to give good governance to the people," he said.

The election of a large number of women members in the recently concluded panchayat polls would open new vistas for their participation in the socio-economic development, the chief minister said.

"The success of panchayat raj lies in the hands of sarpanches and panches. If reach out to people honestly and effectively, the system will flourish and strengthen the democracy in the state," he added.
