Four Mumbai girls win medals at Special Olympics
Mumbai: Four mentally challenged girls from the city have won medals at the Special Olympics, held at Athens last month, the NGO 'Children's Aid Society' said on Monday.
Sakhu Nagarkar bagged two gold and a silver medal in Badminton while Heena bagged a bronze in volleyball at the Olympics.
Kavita Chavan got a bronze medal in handball while Mery Manda bagged a silver and a bronze in cycling.
They were accompanied by a special teacher as a coach.
The NGO runs 'Pitruvatsalya' institute for mentally challenged children for treatment, development and rehabilitation, upto the age of 18.It caters to 170 girls and 130 boys.
In 2003, N K Vimal, representing the institute at the Special Olympics, won a silver medal in swimming.
The state government's minister for women and child development, Varsha Gaikwad, who is also the vice-president of the Children's Aid Society, felicitated the medal-winners at a function recently.
