Now, Muslim artisans making 'kaanvars'
Meerut (UP): Continuing with a
decades-old tradition, Muslim families here are becoming part
of 'Sawan' celebrations by making 'Kanwars', the colourful
pitchers used by Shiva devotees to carry holy water.
During the month of 'Sawan', devotees of Lord Shiva,
known as 'Kanwarias', take water from Ganga in Haridwar to
offer it in various shrines across the country.
Arif and his wife Naseema, residents of the Clock
Tower Colony area, say their family is into the business of
making 'kaanvars' for the last four decades.
It is the main source of livelihood for many Muslim
families of the area.
"Our family is into this business since the past 42
years. We prepare a 'kanwar' in just two hours and earn Rs 200
to 300 for each of them," Arif said.
In Meerut and its neighbouring areas like Hapur,
Ghaziabad and Moradabad, Muslims are the main manufacturers of
'Kaanvars'.
