Minister appeals Anna not to go on hunger strike

Ranchi: Union Minister of state for Planning Ashwani Kumar on Saturday appealed to civil rights activist Anna Hazare not to go ahead with hunger strike as Lokpal Bill was still in the proposal stage.

"My appeal to Anna Hazare is to wait till the proposal go through the democratic process by standing committee, debate and discussions in Parliament," Kumar told reporters here.

He asked Hazare to wait till completion of all the democratic processes on the draft proposal, hours after the civil activist in Delhi told reporters that he had not got a venue for his protest on August 16.

"Hunger strike was a weapon of Mahatma Gandhiji against the British because of foreign rule. But now governments are elected democratically and any one disagreeing with its views can participate in elections to unseat it," Kumar added.

Kumar is on a two-day visit to Jharkhand to inspect Centrally sponsored welfare schemes.
